We are not so much as low budget film makers as no budget filmmakers, but like Roger Corman once wrote, "Its much more interesting to make a film with little or no money but lots of enthusiasm and imagination." Here are a few tips on how we do what we do, and how we've managed to make all our films without spending anything.
1. Be polite and don't be afraid to ask. In industry tearms this is called blagging." We have managed to blag several locations for ourselves to use free of charge. We were very nice to the man in charge of the Peterborough Cathedral during the filming of Angel and managed to avoid the charge they have for filming in the building. To get the office block foyer and lift that you see in making an omlette, we just went into the said building and asked if we could use it there and then. We even managed to get the receptionist to play a small part in the film.
2. Do everything yourselves. We do every aspect of the film making ourselves. Pre - production, writing, planning, location scouting. Production, acting cinamatography and direction. Post Production, Editing, distribution and promotion. All aspects are done by us meaning we don't have to pay anyone and we have full control throughout the process.
3. Act in your own films. We write most of our films for us to act in, basically because it is a lot easier then getting professional actors, and are both reasonably good actors we do Theatre Studies at A level, so we know pretty much what were doing. This also gives us the opportunity to get other actors for free offering students the experience and the recognition for free.
4. Don't bother with a camera man. Do it all yourself, usually we are tho only two people involved in our films. Its easy if there is only one character or your not in the film. Also if there aren't two people in one shot but we do achieve us both in the same shot on several occasions, this is done with a great deal off timing, precision and sometimes luck. Overall the fewer technical staff the better partly because its cheaper, but also because we hold total control over the production.
5. Borrowing or making equipment. Equipment is expensive even to hire, so what we do is borrow or make our own. We frequently use our schools video cameras and tripods. There are many people out there that have all the expensive gear but never use it so just be nice and ask around. Making your own accessories and rigs also save us a lot of money. Using office chairs, shopping trolleys, pivoted planks of wood, skateboards and so on combined with a little bit of DIY a lot of zip ties and botch tape you can create adequate cranes, dollyies, tracks, car mounts and steady cams that you require to get THAT shot.
